Collingwood Museum Returns Historic Bust to Globe and Mail

After Solving 70 Year Old Mystery

June 19, 2012, an historic bust of George Brown that has survived fire, dust, physical upheaval, and organizational changes in Collingwood for more than 70 years is being returned to its lender, the Globe and Mail, by Mayor Sandra Cooper and Susan Warner, Museum Supervisor, on Tuesday, June 19 at 12:00pm in Toronto.   Philip Crawley, Globe and Mail Publisher and CEO, will be present to complete the transfer.

The identity and source of Brown’s bust, which has been residing in the Collingwood Museum’s artifact collection, have been mysteries to Museum staff and volunteers since 1970.  Thanks to the efforts of current staff and Laurentian University student Noah Morritt, the bust’s identity and lender have been identified.

For 23 years the bust was exhibited in the Huron Institute’s Museum (the predecessor of the Collingwood Museum), located in the basement of Collingwood’s Carnegie Library, having been loaned from the Globe and Mail in 1940, an arrangement made by Huron Institute Curator, David Williams.  Following the 1963 Library fire, the bust was relocated at least five times until coming to reside in the reconstructed Station, which now houses the Collingwood Museum.

“This is an exciting and rewarding event for the Museum and the citizens of Collingwood.  Not only does the bust’s return reflect the important work the staff is doing, but it has heightened our understanding of how items from across the province were gathered by the Huron Institute” says Susan Warner, Museum Supervisor.
