Collingwood seeking applicants for first Poet Laureate

8 March 2018 – Collingwood is set to expand its reputation as a thriving arts and culture hub, with the appointment of the Town's first Poet Laureate, expected to be in place by May of this year.

The Poet Laureate is an honorary position that establishes a community representative to champion poetry or the spoken word for a two-year term, by appearing at community events and functions, producing new original works and creative projects that encourage new poets and an appreciation for poetry and the spoken word.

Collingwood's Poet Laureate will be in good company, as a number of Canadian municipalities (such as Owen Sound, Barrie, Mississauga, and Toronto) have their own poets laureate, in addition to the Canadian Poet Laureate. Ontario MPP Percy Hatfield's Poet Laureate of Ontario Act (In Memory of Gord Downie) was introduced in December and would see a Poet Laureate named for the province.

The role in Collingwood would require the applicant to contribute to the appreciation of poetry in Collingwood, create and deliver workshops or projects that engage residents in the power of poetry and help develop new poets and writers, produce new original works that reflect or represent the area or ideas and issues of importance to the community, and work with the the Town's Arts and Culture Coordinator to initiate one project that will leave a lasting contribution to the community.

While applicants don't necessarily have to reside in the Town of Collingwood, they do have to demonstrate a connection to the culture of the area such as our artistic community, natural surroundings or territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation. Applicants should also be willing and able to fulfill the responsibilities of the Poet Laureate program and share their love of poetry to the community of Collingwood, and be active in their field, have a body of work (published, self-published or unpublished) that demonstrates a level of skill in writing and performing poetry and have received peer recognition.

The deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Received applications will be measured against eligibility and selection criteria. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an informal discussion about their potential term. If no viable candidates are identified through the open call, the Town is authorized to invite eligible candidates.
