About CANSail

CANSail is the national standard for Learn to Sail Programs in Canada. CANSail provides the curriculum and evaluative criteria that the Collingwood Sailing School (CSS) implements into its daily sailing operations. To learn more about the CANSail levels offered at CSS and identify which level is appropriate for your child see below.

New sailors begin in CANSail 1. CANSail 1 and 2 is the introductory stage where students learn the basics of sailing including theory, boat handling, rigging, terminology, team work, and safety.

CANSail 3 and 4 is the intermediate stage where students learn more advantaged sailing skills. Here they learn about the technical and best practices of sailing and in CANSail 4 be introduced to spinnaker flying.

Sailors are introduced to spinnaker and trapeze. Skills include gybing and dousing positions and trapeze movements.

This level is taken in conjunction with CANSail 3 & 4. As this level is dependant on there being sufficient wind, students may register for an additional week and content will be covered as weather permits throughout the entire time registered.

How long will it take to complete my CANSail levels?

With CANSail it is very difficult to achieve levels in 1 week. Generally CANSail 2 will take a minimum of 2 weeks for the average athlete, but yes there are some who achieve this in only 1 week. CANSail 3 & 4 both are very theory heavy and have more to do with refining your skills so on average these levels take 3-5 weeks to complete.

Previously enrolled in a sailing school?

Students who are in the CANSail program will have a Checklist profile which all Ontario Sailing Member Clubs have access to. So all your hard work and achievements can move with you!

Students that have previously been enrolled in a sailing school that implemented the CYA Traditional standard, please refer to the table to the left to identify which level to register for.

If you are unsure what level you are in, don't worry! Simply register for one of the sailing sessions and our certified instructors will evaluate and put you in the correct level based on your ability.
