Hours of Work:         Normal hours of work are forty (40) hours per week, usually Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a thirty (30) minute unpaid meal break. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary as there may be the occasional requirement to attend to functions outside of normal work hours, change shifts (evening, weekend, or holidays), respond to urgent matters, or work overtime as needed.

Parks Operators are responsible for maintenance of parks, trails, harbour and horticulture. Areas of responsibility include: parks, associated buildings and amenities; open spaces; sport fields; playgrounds; waterfront; harbour and docking facility; trails and pathways; downtown streetscapes; skateboard park; water features; horticulture; trees; and, natural landscape areas. Parks Operators ensure the safety and cleanliness of public open spaces and address minor maintenance and repairs of the parks, trails and harbour. The position supports seasonal staff to ensure day-to-day functions are performed and procedures followed. Parks Operators respond to on-demand requests and scheduled work tasks. The main duties and responsibilities of the position are in the areas of park operations, winter operations, administrative and other functions.

The preferred candidate possesses the following:

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  1. Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Possess or willing to obtain certification in propane handling, WHMIS, Working at Heights/Elevated Platform training, Traffic Protection, chainsaw safety training, and Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
  3. One (1) year of experience in outdoor horticulture/green space maintenance, and ability to operate machinery and power equipment relevant to the job. General equipment and machine operation experience and/or an appreciation for horticulture operations would be an asset
  4. Working knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Act, standard operating procedures, departmental policies and procedures. Experience in painting, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry and structural repairs.
  5. Excellent communication, interpersonal, time management, and public relations skills, together with the ability to use tact and discretion and to deal courteously and effectively with the public and fellow staff members.
  6. Ability to multi-task, cope with interruptions and work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines, exercise discretion and good judgment. Possess initiative and personal integrity.
  7. Physically capable of performing the required functions of the position (e.g., standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling), operating cleaning equipment, and wearing the applicable personal protective equipment (e.g., helmet, cleats, steel-toed footwear, etc.).
  8. Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office applications and office equipment.
  9. Willing and available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, and participate in the scheduled on-call rotation.
  10. Valid Class “G” driver’s license and current Driver’s Abstract with results satisfactory to the Employer. Ability and willingness to travel within the community as required.
  11. Possess a current Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with results satisfactory to the employer, and a valid standard first aid & CPR/AED Level C certification (or willing to obtain).
