Ace Cabs Discontinuing Accessible Taxi Services on September 30
As of September 30, 2020, Ace Cabs will no longer be providing accessible taxi service within the Town of Collingwood. The Town recognizes the need for this municipal service and is working towards a solution to continue to be a progressive, accessible municipality.
For the last 13 years, the accessible taxi service has served the community with several different operators and service contracts with municipal subsidies. The most recent contract expired in April 2020 and it was understood that Ace Cabs would continue this service permanently, without a contract, with the Town of Collingwood. With the unforeseen financial challenges brought forth during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ace Cabs has identified operational business changes that are necessary to continue to employ staff and meet the transportation needs of the community, thereby deciding to discontinue the accessible service.
The Town will consult with the Accessibility Committee to determine future steps required to provide ‘on-demand’ accessible service. The Town will work with their specialized service provider, the Canadian Red Cross, to determine how interim service levels for paratransit transportation services can increase once the Ace Cabs service discontinues.
The Town would also like to remind the community that the conventional transit service, COLLTRANS, and the Specialized Transit Service, Red Cross, offer service for riders who require mobility aids and wheelchairs. The Red Cross also provides door to door service to riders with disabilities.
The Town is committed to addressing the need for accessible services and will communicate through media releases and social media with updates on progress. For more information on accessible transit, please visit our website at www.collingwood.ca/transit.
