The Future of Collingwood Council Compensation & Composition decided

Council received the final report on Council Compensation and Composition from Compensation Governance Partners (CGP) at its meeting held July 24, 2022. The Town retained the services of CGP to independently study the compensation and composition of its Town Council, specifically its Mayor, Deputy Mayor and 7 Councillors.
The report reviewed whether compensation changes will enable greater participation by Members who represent the community as Council members, and how Collingwood compares to other municipalities of similar size (permanent and seasonal residents), complexity and/or budget regarding matters that Council considers, and/or nearby municipalities in terms of council size, compensation, and the part-time status of their roles.
After reviewing the report and recommendations, Council approved that the role of Mayor will change from part-time to full-time equivalency. This is due in large part to the growing number of responsibilities, engagements and meetings expected of the position. This position of Mayor will also now see an increase in compensation, reflective of the change to full time equivalency, from $45,820 to $60,900 annually.
Council voted to remain status quo in terms of composition of Council, which is 9 members, however approved an increase in compensation for councillors from $25,807 to $28,000 annually based on the findings of CGP.
The position of Deputy Mayor will remain unchanged in terms of compensation, so for the next Council term it will remain $32,548 annually.
All changes will be effective November 15, 2022, with the swearing in of the 2022-2026 Council.
Thinking of Running for Council?
Council members represent the community and make important decisions about the future of our community. Members are supported by Town staff who provide reports including professional information and advice.
Members of Collingwood Council are elected through an at large election process, meaning each council member represents all taxpayers and residents of Collingwood and not a specific ward or area. Nominations will be accepted for the positions listed below during regular business hours, with the last day to submit a nomination being August 19, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. (Nomination Day). Those wishing to submit a nomination are encouraged to set up a nomination appointment ahead of time to ensure staff availability by contacting Clerk Services at election@collingwood.ca or by calling 705-445-1030.
