WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian women. It touches the lives of so many families every day; and
WHEREAS, The CIBC Run for the Cure gives families, friends and supporters the opportunity to come together to honour and celebrate their loved ones. And to make a real difference for all people in Canada impacted by breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, This CIBC Run for the Cure serves as a unifying force, rallying an incredibly dedicated collective of Canadians who show that each of us has a role to play when it comes to taking on cancer. It is an inspirational day that raises important funds for CCS, the largest charitable funder of breast cancer research in Canada. CCS invests these dollars into lifesaving breast cancer research, compassionate support services, trusted cancer information and advocacy on behalf of all Canadians. Thanks to the generosity of CIBC Run for the Cure supporters, we know more than ever before how to prevent, diagnose, treat and live with and beyond breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, In 1992, a small but dedicated group of volunteers began a movement in Toronto’s High Park. They brought together 1,500 people to raise awareness and raised $85,000 for the breast cancer cause. This moment marked the beginning of what was to become the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure. It continues to be a volunteer-led event and is now the largest breast cancer fundraiser in Canada, raising more than $500 million to date.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Yvonne Hamlin, Mayor of the Town of Collingwood,
DO HEREBY PROCLAIM October, as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in the Town of Collingwood.
