Collingwood has had a twin city relationship with Katano, Japan since 1981. The twinning relationship started with an invitation / letter from a Collingwood-born man who was living and working in Katano – Rob Shannon. In 1980 he sent a letter to Collingwood, requesting their participation in an exchange for their soccer clubs. The exchange didn't materialize, however, Katano's Mayor Harada proposed a twinning relationship (common practice in Japan). Subsequently, an invitation came from Mayor Harada’s office in 1981 inviting Collingwood to enter into a twinning relationship. Mayor Ron Emo was the Mayor of Collingwood at the time and the CAO was Gord Norris. A tour to Japan, and specifically Katano, occurred in 1981 with a very formal ceremony commencing the twinning relationship on November 3, 1981.
Since then, this pairing has been successful with active volunteers in both communities keeping the relationship strong. Friendship Gardens is dedicated to this sister city relationship, located north of the Police station on Minnesota Street.
