Heritage Collingwood

Collingwood's Conservation & Promotion of Heritage & Culture service includes the collection and preservation of history related to the Town of Collingwood, the delivery of public programming related to Collingwood's heritage, and the management of heritage conservation incentives and requirements under the Ontario Heritage Act within the sub-services of Museum Collection, Museum Activities, and Built Heritage.

The Town of Collingwood's Heritage service supports the conservation and protection of historic buildings, heritage properties, and cultural landscapes throughout the community.

Heritage Conservation

Did you know? The Town of Collingwood was the first municipality in Canada to have a Heritage Conservation District included on the prestigious Canadian Register of Historic Places.

Collingwood is proud of its Heritage District and designated properties and recognizes the efforts of heritage property owners who help preserve these important buildings and cultural landmarks that contribute to the character and history of the community.

View the Heritage Property Interactive map to explore properties designated under the Ontario Heritage Act or discover the Heritage District using the Discover Collingwood App.

Heritage Property Owners

Own a heritage property or thinking about purchasing a heritage property?

The Collingwood Downtown Heritage Conservation District Plan, 2008 provides material and design guidance for properties located within the Heritage District.

Properties designated under Part IV (individual properties) or V (Heritage Conservation District) of the Ontario Heritage Act require a Heritge Permit before making exterior alterations, including:

  • Painting
  • Window replacements
  • Doors
  • Fences
  • Signage
  • Other exterior features or alterations

Properties adjacent to designated heritage properties may also be impacted by Heritage District requirements.

Before making exterior changes or beginning a project, contact the Planning Department at planning@collingwood.ca to discuss proposed alterations and heritage Permit requirements.
