Collingwood Council has endorsed the Town’s Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan, a practical roadmap for preparing for weather changes already affecting the community, including heavier rainfall, flooding, hotter summers, shoreline erosion, and warmer winters.
The Plan, which focuses on preparedness and responsible investment, is a living document with 19 actions organized under three themes: People and Community, Services and Operations, and Natural Environment.
“Adaptation is about practical planning for weather conditions we are already seeing in Collingwood,” said Mayor Hamlin. “Preparing early helps protect residents, properties, and the services people count on. It also helps the Town plan ahead, make informed budget decisions and reduce the costs that can come with emergency repairs after severe weather.”
The Plan It was informed by local climate data, technical analysis, input from Town staff and regional partners, and feedback from the community. Together, this work identified the climate risks that matter most in Collingwood and the actions the community can take to manage them.
The Plan outlines practical actions to:
• reduce risks from heavier rain, flooding and extreme heat;
• keep roads, stormwater systems, buildings and other municipal services working reliably;
• protect parks, trails, wetlands, the shoreline and other natural areas;
• strengthen emergency planning and response;
• build the Town’s readiness before larger projects move ahead; and
• share practical information that helps residents and community partners prepare.
Council’s endorsement moves the Plan into implementation. Actions will be advanced over time through Town work plans, budgets, asset management and other approved projects. Individual investments will continue to come forward through the Town’s regular budget and decision-making processes.
