This is an important reminder to residents and visitors to use caution when using QR codes to pay for parking in Collingwood.
A recent report of a fraudulent QR code being placed over the Town's parking sign at Sunset Point Park was brought to the Town's attention. When scanned, the QR code directed the user to an unauthorized website and prompted them to enter personal and payment information. Other municipalities have experienced this type of fraudulent, unauthorized QR code scam.
Upon receiving the report, the Town's By-law staff immediately tested and verified that QR codes on HotSpot parking signs throughout the waterfront areas and downtown Collingwood were functioning as intended and directing users to the correct HotSpot application. No tampering with these signs was reported. By-law staff will continue to routinely inspect QR codes on Town parking signs to ensure they work as intended and haven't been tampered with.
How to Protect Yourself
When scanning a QR code anywhere, before you enter any personal or payment information, you should always:
- Check QR codes for signs of tampering, damage, or stickers placed over the original code.
- Confirm they have been directed to the official HotSpot Parking website.
