This November, the Collingwood Museum invites the community to reflect, remember, and honour the men and women who have served Canada in armed conflict through two special programs centered on remembrance and local history.
Beyond The Names: Mapping Collingwood’s First World War Soldiers and Nurses
The Collingwood Museum is honoured to announce Beyond the Names: Mapping Collingwood’s First World War Soldiers and Nurses, an interactive online Story Map launching in November to coincide with the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary.
The online Story Map records the locations of approximately 100 local soldiers and nurses whose names are engraved on Collingwood’s cenotaph. Through historic photographs, personal stories, and location markers, the map brings the individuals behind the names to life. By connecting these stories to places within the community, the Story Map offers a deeper understanding of the First World War's profound impact on our community and serves as a lasting tribute to their sacrifice.
The Story Map also includes photographs and information about local recruitment, as well as the history of Collingwood’s cenotaph. The Museum’s Collection Support seasonal staff researched historical information for the project with support from the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations Granting Program.
Starting November 9, access the new Story Map on the museum webpage.
