The Town of Collingwood is taking another step toward supporting sustainable practices in the community by introducing compostable pet waste bags at pet waste dispensers throughout Town parks, trails, and public spaces.
Residents will begin noticing new stickers on pet waste dispensers identifying the change and providing information on how to properly dispose of the new bags. The compostable bags are intended to be taken home and placed in residents’ Green Bins, helping divert waste from the landfill and supporting the community’s waste reduction efforts.
The Town recognizes that this change may require a small adjustment for residents who are used to disposing of pet waste bags in public garbage bins. However, by bringing compostable pet waste bags home for proper disposal, dog owners can help make a positive environmental impact with every walk.
“Small actions, when taken by many people, can create meaningful change,” said Wendy Martin, Manager, Parks. “By switching to compostable pet waste bags, we are giving residents another opportunity to help reduce landfill waste and support more sustainable practices in our community.”
The new bags offer the same convenience for pet owners while providing a more environmentally responsible disposal option. Pet owners are required under By-law 2012-016, section 10.9, to pick up after their pets, and are encouraged to look for the updated stickers on pet waste dispensers throughout Collingwood.
