Collingwood Recognizes National Indigenous History Month & National Indigenous Peoples Day

National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada and on June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day is honoured. Throughout June explore the different opportunities available in Collingwood to celebrate and recognize the distinct heritage, cultures, customs, languages and traditions of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples who have lived on and cared for this land since time immemorial.

 

Throughout June, the Town of Collingwood is supporting several initiatives in collaboration with the community including:

 

StoryWalk© 

Go Show the World: A Celebration of Indigenous Heroes by Wab Kinew pays tribute to historic and modern-day Indigenous heroes touching briefly on their stories, inspiring future heroes. StoryWalk© is located along the Train Trail beginning at the Collingwood Museum at 45 St. Paul Street running to Collins Street. Go Show the World will be available all month long.

 

Beading Workshop 

Sunday, June 18, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Awen’ Gathering Place

Learn about Indigenous beadwork and design. This workshop is suitable for new and experienced beaders, an opportunity to learn a new skill or practice an old while working and connecting with others. Free. Registration required visit www.collingwood.ca/seasons.

 

Changing of the Seasons: Summer Solstice, organized through the Collingwood Indigenous Circle

Sunday, June 18, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Awen’ Gathering Place

Join Knowledge Keepers James and Lori Kewaquom as we honour the Summer Solstice through Indigenous cultural teaching and knowledge sharing. Jennifer McFarlane and Heather McIntyre will emcee the gathering joined by drum group Ashunyung from Georgina Island. Activities will include Indigenous teachings, sacred fire, Inuit games, raffle entry for attendees wearing a ribbon skirt, ribbon shirt or Indigenous handmade items and Indigenous vendors.

 

National Indigenous Peoples Day with Amanda Rheaume 

Wednesday, June 21st, 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Collingwood Amphitheatre

Amanda Rheaume is a Citizen of the Metis Nation and an active proud member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Rheaume’s music is from the heart and the land, inspired by a long line of tireless, transformational organizers and activists. From the International Indigenous Music Summit to the newly founded Ishkode Records and National Indigenous Music Office, the goal of raising Indigenous sovereignty in the music industry drives all Rheaume’s work. This event is part of the Live & Original music initiative.

 

Visit the Collingwood Public Library and explore books by Indigenous authors sharing stories of history, culture, and resilience. Discover movies, documentaries, and music by Indigenous artists. Listen to a podcast that shares an Indigenous perspective. Support Indigenous entrepreneurs and businesses. Learn more about the land you are on and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
