
WHEREAS, Earth Day is celebrated with the goal of inspiring environmental awareness and
encouraging the conservation and appreciation of our planet’s shared natural resources; and,
WHEREAS, climate change, along with biodiversity and natural ecosystem loss threaten the life-support systems that make our world habitable; and
WHEREAS, the United Nation’s recent ‘Climate Change 2023’ report states that equitable and
effective action is needed now to reduce losses and damages for nature and people and that action will provide co-benefits including clean energy, water and air; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Collingwood declared a Climate Emergency on October 16th, 2019;
and,
WHEREAS, local organizations including the Environment Network and Collingwood Youth
Centre, Pollinate Collingwood, the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust, the Nature League, Georgian Bay Forever, the CCI Gaia Club, Protect Our Winters Collingwood, Friends of Silver Creek and the Collingwood Climate Action Team advocate for the preservation of our local environment; and,
WHEREAS, partnerships, education and positive environmental actions should be encouraged
and supported by the Town of Collingwood and all of its citizens, businesses, and institutions to take action to protect our natural environment and address climate change in order to ensure the present and future wellbeing of our home and community.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Yvonne Hamlin, Mayor of the Town of Collingwood,
DO HEREBY PROCLAIM April 22, 2023 as “Earth Day” in the Town of Collingwood.
