PROCLAMATION - Earth Day - April 22, 2020

WHEREAS, the first Earth Day was celebrated with the goal of inspiring environmental awareness and encouraging the conservation, protection, and appreciation of our nation’s natural resources;  

WHEREAS, the IPCC’s 2018 special report on global warming indicates an urgent need to limit the increase in the global mean surface temperature from pre-industrial levels to 1.5 degrees Celsius;  

WHEREAS, climate change represents the greatest challenge to the future of humanity and the lifesupport systems that make our world habitable;  

WHEREAS, the Town of Collingwood declared a Climate Emergency on October 16, 2019;  

WHEREAS the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust, the Environment Network, the Nature League, and the Collingwood Climate Action Team, through their respective memberships, support the preservation of our local environment;  

WHEREAS, the steps we can take to protect and preserve our natural environment through education, partnerships, and positive actions should be encouraged in the Town of Collingwood; 

WHEREAS, the enormous challenge — but also the vast opportunities — of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. 

NOW THEREFORE, I, Brian Saunderson, Mayor of the Town of Collingwood, 

DO HEREBY PROCLAIM April 22, 2020 as “Earth Day” in the Town of Collingwood, and encourage all of its inhabitants, businesses, and institutions to use Earth Day to celebrate the Earth and promote the wellbeing of the inhabitants of the town and the protection of their environment.
