The Town of Collingwood is pleased to announce that its offer to purchase the historic federal building at 44 Hurontario Street has been accepted, marking an important milestone in exploring the future of one of the community's most recognizable landmark properties.
Earlier this summer, the Town invited residents, businesses, community organizations, and stakeholders to share ideas and aspirations for the building's future through a community visioning exercise. The strong response highlighted the community's interest in preserving the building's heritage while exploring opportunities for future community use.
“This is an exciting step forward for the community and for the future of this iconic downtown building,” said Mayor Yvonne Hamlin. “We want to thank everyone who took the time to share their ideas and vision for the property. Community input will continue to play an important role as Council makes decisions on the building’s future use.”
This property represents a potentially cost-effective opportunity to preserve and repurpose an important community asset. The accepted offer is an important milestone, but there is still work ahead. The Town will continue to advance due diligence activities and further evaluate options for the building's future use to ensure any future decisions reflect value for our taxpayers.
Community feedback received to date will help inform future discussions, alongside financial, technical, operational, regulatory, and heritage considerations. This land transaction is anticipated to close no later than December 2026 upon satisfaction of the due diligence conditions included in the Agreement of Purchase and Sale, with disclosure of the purchase price to be provided to the public at that time.
As planning moves forward, the Town remains committed to a transparent and community-informed process. Additional public engagement opportunities will be announced in the coming months, giving residents and stakeholders further opportunities to help shape the property's future vision.
Potential future uses remain undetermined, and no decisions have been made about the building's long-term use. The Town will continue to explore opportunities that align with community priorities, heritage preservation objectives, downtown revitalization goals, and the Community-Based Strategic Plan. Service Canada will continue to operate from the building under its existing lease arrangements for several years while future uses for this iconic downtown property are explored.
Community members are encouraged to stay informed as the project progresses by subscribing for updates through the project page. Information about future engagement opportunities, project milestones, and key decisions will be shared as it becomes available.
