Preparing for a Changing Climate
Collingwood is already experiencing the effects of climate change. We are experiencing more extreme weather, changing seasonal conditions, hotter temperatures, heavier rainfall, and more frequent storms. These changes can affect our infrastructure, natural environment, local economy, and overall community well-being.
The Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan helps the Town prepare for these impacts and build a more resilient community. While efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions address the causes of climate change, adaptation focuses on preparing for and responding to the effects.
The Adaptation Action Plan brings together actions from existing Town plans and strategies, including initiatives identified in the Stormwater Management Master Plan, Asset Management Plan, and other municipal planning documents. It also introduces new actions informed by best practices and community feedback gathered throughout the planning process. By combining these efforts into a one Plan, the Town can take a coordinated approach to managing climate risks and protecting the services residents and visitors rely on every day.
The Plan identifies and actions that will help the Town anticipate, respond to, and recover from climate-related impacts while continuing to provide safe, reliable, and sustainable services to residents and visitors.
What is Climate Change Adaptation?
Climate adaptation is about preparing for the impacts of a changing climate and reduce risks to our community. As Collingwood experiences changing weather patterns, more extreme heat, heavier rainfall, flooding, and severe storms, adaptation helps protect people, infrastructure, municipal services, and the natural environment.
Taking action now can help protect roads, buildings, water systems, and natural areas. It can also improve public safety, support emergency preparedness, and reduce future costs by addressing climate risks before they become more serious and expensive.
Examples of climate adaptation include:
- Preparing for more frequent flooding and extreme rainfall
- Reducing risks from extreme heat events
- Strengthening infrastructure and municipal services
- Protecting natural areas that help manage climate impacts
- Improving emergency preparedness and response
- Supporting community health and safety during severe weather events
By planning ahead and investing in resilience, the Town can better manage climate risks and help ensure Collingwood remains a safe, healthy, and vibrant community for future generations.
