Re: Urgent Request for Provincial Action to Preserve Recycling Services for Small Businesses and Community Organizations
Please be advised that the Town of New Tecumseth Council passed the following resolution at their meeting of December 1, 2025:
Whereas the Province of Ontario is transitioning to a producer-responsibility recycling framework intended to improve environmental outcomes and shift the cost of recycling from municipalities to producers;
And Whereas the current implementation of this framework excludes most small commercial and institutional properties — including small businesses, places of worship, and community organizations from receiving curbside recycling services;
And Whereas the County of Simcoe and its local municipalities have announced that, as a result, they will no longer be able to provide curbside recycling collection to these users as of January 1, 2026;
And Whereas the loss of recycling services for these community members will lead to increased waste going to landfill, higher costs for small organizations, and negative environmental impacts, including risks to water quality in the Lake Simcoe watershed;
Therefore Be It Resolved That the Council of the Town of New Tecumseth calls on the Government of Ontario to take immediate action to amend the producer-responsibility framework to ensure continued access to recycling services for small businesses and community organizations;
And Further That this resolution be forwarded to:
