School Crossing Guards
The Town of Collingwood School Crossing Guard program is administered by the By-law Services Division. Our School crossing guards ensure the safe crossing of students as they travel to and from school at designated school crossing locations in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, the Occupational Health and Safety.
Starting January 1, 2016, drivers and cyclists must stop and yield the whole roadway at school crossings where there is a crossing guard displaying a school crossing stop sign. For more information, visit the Ministry of Transportation website.
The Town of Collingwood has nine (9) crossing guard locations throughout the Town serving six (6) schools. The role of the school crossing guard is to, among other things:
- Create a safe gap in traffic flow so as to ensure children and pedestrians cross the street in a safe manner;
- Assist to discourage children from making risky and impulsive decisions while crossing the street such as crossing the street without looking or crossing against a traffic signal; and
- Encourage safe behaviour to all pedestrians at school crossings and may also observe and report any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard.
